- <p> [Text] Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO] aid has been
- held up near Mitsiwa Port for a week, and the EPLF [Eritrean
- People's Liberation Front] has not allowed UN officials ashore.
- FAO says it has been forced to return its delegation to its
- headquarters so the vessel carrying officials and relief aid,
- which is desperately needed to save four million lives in
- northern Ethiopia, has also left Mitsiwa. The FAO sent the
- vessel following the Ethiopian authorities' approval to use
- Mitsiwa Port. It is puzzling why the EPLF will not allow the
- FAO officials with food aid to use the port. This move is aimed
- at compelling the government to accept their terms for settling
- the conflict. A solution to the famine crisis must not be
- delayed because four million lives are at stake. According to
- the UN, 900,000 tonnes of food will be needed.
